BACK OFF OR DIE

Tanner left Romeo and Jackson to guard Kay and Abbott while he went to talk to Nicholas Reynolds. He had eaten a good meal before leaving the estate and was heading into London later than he’d planned. Thanks to Nigel Porter, Tanner knew Reynolds often stayed at the office late.

Porter said the man watched sports in his office instead of at home. He thought Reynolds wasn’t in a hurry to get home to his wife and used work as an excuse to spend less time with her.

Tanner was hoping to follow Reynolds home, where he could confront him inside the parking garage. He’d seen photos of the man online and knew what he drove.

Reynolds lived in an exclusive building in the Mayfair section of London with his wife. The wife was in the same class of rich as Mrs. Cromwell. Nigel Porter guessed their apartment was worth over thirty million pounds.

Reynolds drove a Porsche Spyder that was a unique shade of blue. Instead of heading home, he drove in the opposite direction. Tanner followed.

Another car was tailing Reynolds. It was a new silver Mercedes that left the same parking garage as the Porsche. After the vehicles stopped outside a bank in Canary Wharf, Tanner saw Dan Culvert emerge from the Mercedes. He recognized him from photos he’d seen on Xenonox’s website. Culvert headed into the bank after someone inside unlocked the front door to let him in.

Reynolds stayed in his Porsche and waited. Tanner considered approaching him while he was alone, then decided not to. Culvert was inside a bank after normal business hours. The reason was likely interesting. Tanner wanted to wait and see what happened next.

When Culvert left the bank, he was carrying a briefcase. The men drove on and went into an area where their expensive vehicles made them conspicuous. Their destination was a warehouse. They coasted down a wide alley to reach it. Other warehouses were on the same block, along with vacant lots. There was no other traffic, and the other warehouses were closed. The only other activity was taking place a block away from the alley’s entrance, where there was a bar and a snooker parlor.

Tanner was able to see Reynolds’ brake lights come on before he drove past the alley. The warehouse was positioned near water, with nothing behind it. He assumed Reynolds and Culvert were there to meet with someone. He wanted to know who that was. Tanner left his vehicle. He had to get closer and see what was going on. He entered the alleyway while keeping his back pressed against a wall where there were several dumpsters. The alley was shadowy, as the sun was setting. Someone had been using it as a toilet; there was a scent of urine in the air.

There were two men standing outside the entrance to the warehouse. They frisked Reynolds and Culvert after the men stepped out of their cars. Tanner knew a mobster when he saw one on either side of the Atlantic.
